National Deworming Day on 10th February 2015 –

The state of Madhya Pradesh has conducted National Deworming Day (NDD) on 10th February 2015 in all 51 districts in convergence with the DoE, DoWCD, Tribal Department and other development partners (DtWI, UNICEF & MI). The total target beneficiaries between the ages of 1-19 years were approximately 2.08 crore out of which the state could reach out and render deworming service to approximately 1.84 crore children with the coverage of 89%.

The reporting system has been shifted to the ASHA and CUG messages are being sent to the field functionaries on monthly basis thereby streamlining the timely reporting of WIFS. Wall paintings of WIFS in middle, high and higher secondary schools of 17 HPDs have been completed for rendering visibility to the WIFS programme. WIFS component has been included in the teacher’s training curriculum of Department of School Education also.

Adolescent anemia is a critical public health problem in India with a glaring gender disparity. In Madhya Pradesh, anemia in ever married women (15-49 yrs) is 57.6%. The future of

adolescent girls in the country seems dismal with a vicious cycle of underweight adolescence, child marriage and maternal mortality. More than half of them (56%) are anemic and 43% are married off before the age of 18. To address anemia in Madhya Pradesh, the State has been focusing on micronutrient supplementation interventions n children between 6m -60m and adolescent age group over the years. Further to build up on the gains of the existing programmes, Weekly Iron Folic supplementation programme (WIFS) is being implemented from 3rd Dec 2013 focusing on boys and girls of adolescent age group.
